In December 2017, as a stay at home mum of 3 children who were at the time aged 5 years, 2 years, and 11 months, I was burned out. I was trying to give everything to my children but was so emotionally, physically, and spiritually spent that what they were actually getting was a very grumpy, often shouting mummy who wanted more to hide from them than play with them.
Then two things collided in my life. First was a section of audiobook I listened to by Sarah Mae and Sally Clarkson called Desperate: Hope for the Mom Who Needs to Breathe. It spoke about Sarah visiting Sally and how much that short break had been needed to recharge herself. I listened to this just as I started a Bible study by Good Morning Girls leader Courtney Joseph called Rest and Release which focused on resting in God and releasing our stresses to Him.
Suddenly I wanted to plan a weekend away! A girly, treat-filled, relaxing weekend away to not only take a break from being a wife/mother/daughter/sister/homemaker/etc. but also to get closer to God and to refill myself so I had more to give to my husband and my children. I knew that if I felt like I needed this break, others must too. I started asking around and slowly pulled together a “Rest in the Lord” retreat for November 2018 with a few friends. Interest in the retreat grew! I realised that not only was I right about other women wanting this kind of spiritual break from the stresses of everyday life, but that I couldn’t find anything like what we were looking for.
In July 2018 I took part in The Prince’s Trust’s Explore Enterprise course to help me work out how to turn this idea into a real business and as soon as the course finished on the Friday I threw myself into setting up as a proper business! Thus Re:Treat Ministries UK was born!
